FEAST DAY OF ST MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP, August 8
Celebrating the Gift of Mary MacKillop (St Mary of the Cross) to our Church and to our World
Foundress of the Sisters of St Joseph and Australia’s first official saint, Mary was born in Melbourne in 1842 and died in Sydney on August 8, 1909.
She worked tirelessly and courageously to educate poor and isolated children and to support families, especially destitute women and children. She stood against opposition to develop a new form of religious life which enabled her Sisters to respond to those most vulnerable in our nation.
Let’s give thanks today for Mary MacKillop – a woman of courage, compassion, vision and determination.
Happy Feast Day to those dedicated Josephite Sisters who continue her legacy.
