22nd – 28th October 2023: Mater recognises Spiritual Care Givers

Mater celebrated Pastoral Care Week 22-28 October and recognised their spiritual care givers and the ministry they provide. The 2023 theme was It’s Healthy to Get Help, recognising that spirituality and mental health are closely related. The Mater’s tradition of providing help began when the Sisters of Mercy arrived from Dublin in 1861 and founded a private hospital at North Quay, Brisbane.
Today, Mater continues this mission with Pastoral Carer Practitioners throughout Queensland who provide compassionate support and practical assistance to people of all religious and cultural backgrounds.
17 October 2023: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Mercy Community acknowledged the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on 17 October 2023. Mercy Community is driven by its values of compassion, integrity, dignity and empowerment, and they endorse and recognise the importance of universal access to decent work and social protection.
Catherine McAuley, who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831, dedicated her life to caring for the needs of those who were marginalised and oppressed by the unjust social attitudes and practices of the day.
Catherine is the inspiration behind the work at Mercy Community and the staff continue her mission to support and inspire people in need, to live healthy, connected lives within inclusive communities.
16 October 2023: All Hallows’ hosts Head2Heart Camp

On 16 October 2023, All Hallows’ hosted the Edmund Rice Head2Heart Camp. The Head2Heart program is a 24-hour camp that partners student leaders with young children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds to provide an environment of fun, acceptance, care and growth.
The All Hallows’ students created an engaging and fun time-out for young children aged between 6-11 years of age. The students buddied with the young children in a variety of activities with a Halloween theme including skeleton making, spider web walking, ghost bowling, handball, songs and games monster making, and pumpkin decorating.
The students who assisted with the program certainly lived the 2023 School theme “Animate Mercy with Kindness and Joy”.
10 October 2023: St Rita’s Rinse Aid for Relief
Brisbane
St Rita’s Rinse for relief is our proud effort to help Afghan girls who cannot receive an education. In the College’s Year of Simplicity, it is a fun and simple fundraiser to show our support for these people in need.
All donations support the Malala fund. The Malala fund, founded in 2013, supports Afghan education advocates who offer alternative education program’s for girls while schools remain closed.
During the lunchbreak on Tuesday, 10 October, four St Rita’s teams undertook their fundraising efforts to support the Malala fund.

7th October 2023: St Patrick’s College students support Vinnies Sleepout
Townsville
Every night, more than 122,000 people experience homelessness in Australia. On Saturday night, 7 October a group of students took part in St Vincent De Paul’s Sleep Out campaign, raising awareness and making a powerful statement about homelessness. By joining in prayer and deep reflection, students gained an understanding of poverty and their role as young leaders in our community.
4th October 2023: Mount Alvernia celebrates Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi
Brisbane
The Mount Alvernia College community celebrated the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October with a special blessing of pets. Led by Franciscan Father Harry Chan, the event was a way to honour St Francis as the patron saint of animals and ecology. Fr Chan shared that St Francis loved animals and treated all creatures as our brothers and sisters, emphasising the importance of caring for animals and the environment.
