St Rita’s Bake Off in support of Friends of Mithra Organisation
8 December, Brisbane

Throughout Term 4 of 2023, St Rita’s College fundraised by holding a regular ‘bake off’ to support Friends of Mithra. Mithra was founded in 1977 by Sister Mary Theodore, a Presentation Sister from Brisbane, in response to a serious need she saw in the slums of Madras, India. Over forty years later, the St Rita’s community continues Sr Mary Theordore’s legacy by supporting the students of Mithra.

In December 2023, the College was delighted to present Helen Mahoney from Mithra with the funds from their recent fundraising ‘bake off’ initiative. Following the presentation Helen shared with the students how their fundraising efforts would impact the Mithra School and told stories of previous St Rita’s visits to the school, along with the lasting impact these special moments and contributions have on the students of Mithra.

St Ursula’s Community Pantry
December, Yeppoon

In early December 2023, St Ursula’s College Yeppoon launched their new outreach activity for 2024, a Community Pantry designed to support those in need within the community.

The St Ursula’s Community Pantry was erected at the front of the Yeppoon Community Centre in John Street and is already making an important contribution in the lives of others. The initiative, working in partnership with the Livingstone Shire Council, enables students and staff to action the College values of Hospitality and Compassion. Keeping the pantry stocked with non-perishable grocery goods and personal hygiene items means those who are in need of this assistance can access it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

During 2024, funds provided by the Religious of Queensland Social Justice Grant will be used to grow the program to include cooking meals and distributing them to families in need. The College’s Facilities Department constructed the pantry, and the Arts Department provided the creative support with the pantry’s design and appearance.
