November 2024 marks a milestone in the history of Holy Cross Services as Brian Powell, their longest-serving employee, celebrates 50 years of dedicated service. Brian’s journey with the not-for-profit organisation is a testament to the power of hard work, dedication, and the impact of meaningful employment.
Brian’s journey with Holy Cross began in 1974, when he was just 16 years old. He commenced at the Wooloowin laundry, where he quickly became an integral part of the team. When the laundry relocated to Banyo, Brian was quick to move with Holy Cross.
Brian’s story is a shining example of the positive impact that meaningful employment can have on individuals with disabilities. His commitment to Holy Cross Services has been a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating that with the right support and opportunities, anyone can thrive and make a difference.
Throughout his five-decade tenure, Brian’s dedication has been recognised numerous times, earning him multiple awards and plaques for his outstanding service during Mercy Day and International People with Disability Day. His favourite machine is the pillow folder, not just because of its function, but because he likes to interact with his coworkers and work closely with his peers.
As Brian prepares to retire in the next couple of years, he has already mapped out his post-work plans. He looks forward to traveling to nice hotels and indulging in his love of coffee in the lobby’s. His contributions and huge smile will undoubtedly be missed, but his legacy will live on as an inspiration to Holy Cross Services’ current and future employees.
As Brian’s incredible milestone is celebrated, we are reminded of the importance of recognising and valuing our employees’ contributions. As we reflect on his remarkable career, we are reminded that every person deserves a chance to shine and make a difference – just like Brian Powell has done for 50 incredible years.

Brian Powell will celebrate 50 years of dedicated service at Holy Cross Services in November.
