Christmas Blessing

Preparing for Christmas

As we reflect on the Advent Wreath, we are invited to consider the deep significance of Christ’s humble birth and how it calls us to prepare ourselves for the blessings of Christ in our own lives. The Advent journey is not only a time of waiting but a time of deep reflection on how we are called to embody the values of hope, peace, joy, and love that Christ brings to the world.

In the first week, as we light the Candle of Hope, we are reminded of the prophets who foretold the coming of Jesus—a Savior who brings hope not just for a future world, but for a present world filled with uncertainty. In a time when so many are displaced and searching for a place to call home, we are called to live with hope for a just and loving world. Just as Christ’s birth brought hope to a weary world, we too are called to be beacons of hope for those who are struggling.

In the second week, we light the Candle of Peace, symbolising the serenity of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. As we look at the current state of the world, filled with conflict and division, we are reminded that peace must first begin in our hearts. Christ came as the Prince of Peace, not in power or might, but in humility. In the same way, we are invited to become instruments of peace, offering love and compassion to those in need and seeking to create peace in our families, communities, and world.

The Candle of Joy in week three reminds us of the joy the shepherds felt at the birth of Jesus, and the joy that fills our hearts as we celebrate Christ’s arrival. Even in a world of suffering and displacement, there is joy to be found in the good news of Christ’s love for us. As we reflect on the shepherds’ gladness, we too are called to share the joy of the Savior’s birth, especially with those who are most in need of hope and love.

Finally, in week four, we light the Candle of Love, recalling the deep compassion and care that God showed through the gift of Jesus. Love was born in the most humble of circumstances, and in that love, we find the essence of our humanity. This love compels us to reach out to those around us, especially those who are displaced or marginalised, as Christ did for us. We are called to embody this love in our actions and relationships, creating a world where all are welcomed and cherished.

On Christmas Eve, we light the Christ Candle, symbolising Jesus as the Light of the World, fulfilling God’s promise. Christ’s light shines in the darkness, offering hope to all, especially those who are lost or in need. As we prepare to receive the blessings of Christ’s presence, we are reminded that his light is meant to guide and direct us—especially during times of distress or uncertainty. In a world filled with displaced people and longing hearts, we are called to bring that light of Christ into the world, offering peace and hospitality to those who need it most.

As Joyce Rupp’s Christmas blessing reminds us, may we give and receive love generously, and may we greet each person we encounter as another Christ. In a world filled with suffering and displacement, may we carry the peace of Christ within us, sharing it with all, and trusting that this peace will guide us through the challenges we face.

A Christmas blessing
May you give and receive love generously.
May this love echo in your heart like
the joy of church bells on a clear December day.
May each person who comes into your life
be greeted as another Christ.
May the honour given the Babe of Bethlehem
be that which you extend to every guest who enters your presence.
May the hope of this sacred season settle in your soul.
May it be a foundation of courage for you
when times of distress occupy your inner land.
May the wonder and awe that fills the eyes of children
be awakened within you.
May it lead you to renewed awareness and appreciation
of whatever you too easily take for granted.
May the bonds of love for one another be strengthened
as you gather around the table of festivity and nourishment.
May you keep your eye on the Star within you and trust
this Luminescent Presence to guide and direct you each day.
May you go often to the Bethlehem of your heart
and visit the One who offers you peace.
May you bring this peace into our world.
