Lenten Moments Issue 57

Walking on Holy Ground: A Lenten Journey

Then Judas Iscariot,
who was one of the twelve,
went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.
(Mark 14:10)

The actions of Judas reveal the deeper resentments, greed and motivations of the human journey. Turning from good will always compromise us and do violence to our souls.

When we barter away our goodness and our integrity, we pay a price for it. Judas asked how many coins he would receive for handing Jesus over to his enemies. When we hand ourselves over to that which is harmful for us, it depletes us of something much more valuable than money (Rupp, With Grateful Hearts, 41).

When we distort a good, wrench it, inflate it, become consumed by it and no other, we ourselves turn good into evil. … What we exaggerate in life, what we lose balance about, will eventually be our undoing (Chittister, For Everything A Season, 131).

Reflection
When have you lost balance in your life’s journey?

God of the Journey,
may this Lenten season challenge us
to a change of heart:
to live gently,
to love generously,
to count blessings and
to walk paths of peace
and inclusion.

Amen
