Mercy Community celebrates Local Legends

31 October, Brisbane
Local Legends is a brand new Mercy Community initiative created to recognise team members who consistently demonstrate the organisation’s values and show exceptional dedication in their roles. Each month all Mercy Community staff have the opportunity to nominate colleagues who they believe deserve recognition for their exceptional efforts.

The winner for October was Nina Lakua, a Talent Acquisition Partner who has been an integral part of Mercy Community’s recruitment campaign.

Mater surgeon undertakes life-saving surgery

30 October, Brisbane
A Mater surgeon has saved the life of a Brisbane retiree after successfully removing a rare tumour from his liver weighing almost 2kg.  The 15cm hepatocellular carcinoma tumour is the largest Mater Private Hospital Brisbane liver surgeon Dr Joel Lewin has removed from a patient at the hospital.

Dr Lewin said patient Barrie Tibbetts would have died from the aggressive-growing tumour without urgent surgery.  The patient, Mr Tibbetts, 67, was unaware the mass had been growing in his liver until he saw his doctor for a routine check-up.

St Rita’s celebrate Socktober

Year 5 and 6 students from St Rita’s College rocked their craziest socks to celebrate Socktober.  Socktober is an exciting way to bring communities together and make a real impact on global issues.  This year’s Socktober was focussed on raising awareness and funds for the Caring Center in Mongonlia which provides a home for Otgonbayar and his friends who would otherwise have no were else to call home.

The St Rita’s students donated gold coins to support this worthy cause organised by Catholic Mission.

Whitefriars College host a Wellbeing Day

26 October, Melbourne
Year 9 students from Whitefriars College recently teamed up with students from Catholic Ladies College to hold a Wellbeing Day.

The purpose of the day was to provide the students with essential jobs skills while also supporting each other in navigating the challenges ahead in life. The day provided a meaningful experience for all of the students ensuring they are future ready.

St Ursula’s College raise awareness on Invisible Disabilities

26 October, Yeppoon
Students from St Ursula’s College have been raising awareness about Dyslexia (impairment in reading), Dyscalculia (impairment in maths) and Dysgraphia (impairment in written expression) during Specific Learning Difficulties awareness month.

To raise awareness of invisible disabilities, the College used their Presentation Learning and Information Centre to display empowering messages as well as pictures of public figures who have one or more invisible disabilities.

St Patrick’s College support Brighter Lives Giving Day

24 October, Townsville
St Patrick’s College Townsville recently turned blue and yellow to show their support for Brighter Lives Townsville Hospital Foundation‘s Giving Day.

This year marks 35 years of Brighter Lives improving healthcare in North Queensland. The foundation raises funds for essential medical equipment, projects, research, and those little comforts that improve hospital stays, all thanks to their dedicated team of 120 volunteers in yellow shirts who assist throughout the region.

Every dollar raised stays in North Queensland and supports local initiatives, no matter the size. St Patrick’s College supported this local cause to ensure meaningful difference in healthcare.

All Hallows’ support Black Shirt Day

22 October, Brisbane
This year the All Hallows’ School Human Rights Group focused on raising awareness about food insecurity with the theme “No One Should Go Hungry on Our Watch.” To show solidarity, AHSisters wore black shirts, and the school community hosted a food drive to support OzHarvest, an organisation that provides nutritious meals to vulnerable individuals across Australia. Students also attended a presentation by OzHarvest to learn more about the prevalence and impact of food insecurity.

St Ursula’s College Loud Shirt Day

18 October, Yeppoon
Staff and students from St Ursula’s College came together wearing loud and colourful shirts to raise much needed funds for Hear and Say.

Hear and Say are Queensland’s specialised provider of audiology and speech pathology for all people with hearing loss.

St Patrick’s College – Vinnies Sleep Out

11 October, Townsville
St Patrick’s College Yeppoon hosted yet another successful Vinnies Sleep Out. The students participated in activities designed to help them understand the experiences of those facing homelessness, truly trying to walk in their shoes. The evening was a meaningful precursor to the College’s Vinnies Christmas Appeal, where St Patrick’s will continue to support those in need.

Mt Alvernia College support Zonta International

9 October, Brisbane
Mount Alvernia College each year supports Zonta International who support women’s rights and advocate for equality, education and putting an end to child marriage and gender-based violence.  The students packed hundreds of birthing kits which will be distributed overseas to women to ensure they experience a safe birth.

2024 Mater People Awards

4 October, Brisbane
Each year, Mater recognises the outstanding achievements of Mater People across the Health, Education, Research and Foundation ministries at the Mater People Awards.

The Awards recognise those who have gone above and beyond in support of the Mater Mission.

Mercy Partners Treasurer, Les Jones, had the pleasure of attending the Awards and was truly inspired by the wonderful staff at the Mater who pride themselves in providing compassionate care to those in need.
